MRI+ Campaign News

WE DID IT!  WE'VE REACHED OUR $8M GOAL!!

And when we say "we" we mean you!  Reaching this goal was only possible through the many generous donations from our community.  Through every donation and pledge, every person who attended an MRI+ Committee Event, those volunteers who helped raise funds - it's because of you that we are able to bring this important diagnostic tool to Palmerston and District Hospital.  There aren't enough "thank yous" that can be said, but we'll say this one with all sincerity - THANK YOU!

MRI+ Campaign Donor Spotlight - Paul & MaryLou Brown

We’ve finally convinced these quiet philanthropists to allow us to take a photo, highlighting their generosity to our MRI+ Campaign. Recently, Paul and MaryLou Brown added to their already generous MRI+ Campaign contribution, bringing the total to $300,000! Paul and MaryLou focus their philanthropy on the Palmerston and District Hospital, a place that has been pivotal in their lives. Both grew up in Minto, and although life took them to the big city for a while, they came back “home” to build careers – Paul in insurance and MaryLou in nursing at our very own PDH. Paul was one of several Palmerston fire fighters who initially helped to staff the 24/7 Volunteer Ambulance Service when it operated out of the PDH, and contributed many years of excellent leadership as a member of our PDH Foundation. MaryLou offered her clinical expertise when she spent time on the North Wellington Health Care Board, and continues to volunteer through the PDH Auxiliary. They both have spent countless hours helping us to stage our annual Starlight Gala. Small wonder that when they seek to contribute to the long term health of their community that they give generously to the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation. We are grateful for their leadership gifts, and for the time and energy that they both contribute to many of our fundraising events. People like Paul and MaryLou are the reason we have been successful in raising the needed funds to bring our new MRI machine into the community.

PALMERSTON, May 2, 2025 — Today, the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce it has surpassed its $8 million MRI+ Campaign fundraising goal through generous donations from the community including a $75,000 matching gift from Scotiabank. The $8 million includes funds raised to date plus monies pledged to come in over the next few years to establish an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) service at the Palmerston and District Hospital.
The MRI+ Campaign, launched in 2023, has seen extraordinary community support throughout the rural areas of Wellington County. The volunteer Campaign Committee has engaged with community groups, service clubs, individuals and corporate donors to bring this important diagnostic service to the area.  Dan Hill – Co-Chair of the Campaign states “Having organizations like Scotiabank come alongside the Foundation to make this goal a reality is incredibly gratifying.”
The MRI will be used to help diagnose and monitor many medical conditions, providing highly detailed images that allow doctors to visualize soft tissues and organs, which are often difficult to see with other imaging techniques like X-rays or CT scans.
“Scotiabank is honored to have participated in the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation MRI+ Campaign and to witness the remarkable support from the community”, said Stephanie Drost, Scotiabank Branch Manager, Mount Forest. “We are proud to contribute to the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation, ensuring that vital healthcare services remain accessible close to home in our rural community.”
The MRI is expected to be in service by the end of 2025 with the Province of Ontario funding service operation costs. Earl Campbell, Chair of the Hospital Foundation states, “We are grateful to the province for the support through operating funds for this excellent diagnostic tool, especially in our underserviced rural area, and we are looking forward to North Wellington Health Care being able to offer this important service in the community.”
Mark Leslie – Co-Chair of the Campaign offered his thanks to Campaign volunteers, the many donors, and the entire rural Wellington area “Without our generous community, this would not be possible.”
The Campaign will officially close on June 30th, allowing for any last-minute gifts to be received before this time.  For information, please contact Dale Franklin, Development Officer for the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation at [email protected]

Our MRI+ Campaign was the recipient of a $100,000 Pledge from area business, Leslie Motors.  The pledge will be spread out over five years, with the Foundation receiving an annual payment of $20,000.

Leslie Motors is one of the few remaining, truly family owned and operated dealerships, with locations in Harriston, Walkerton and Wingham.  They consider growing communities as fundamental as growing their business.

Investing in a new MRI machine is not just about acquiring a piece of equipment, it's about securing the future of healthcare in our rural community.  Having an MRI will improve patient care, help to attract physicians, and enhance diagnostics and treatment planning.

Pledging is a simple and convenient way to contribute to the MRI+ Campaign.  A pledge is a promise to donate a set dollar amount over a certain period of time.  Making a commitment to donate over the course of the campaign is a way to make a large donation more manageable.  To learn more about pledges, visit our Pledge Information page.

We are so grateful to Leslie Motors for making this Pledge.  We continue to be amazed by our generous local businesses.  Their support for our hospital, and our MRI+ Campaign, helps to keep quality healthcare close to home.

Young Couple First to Pledge $5000 for MRI+ Campaign

The Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation recently launched their MRI+ Campaign.  The campaign’s goal is to raise $8 million which includes purchasing the equipment, retrofitting the space, and installation of the MRI at the Palmerston and District Hospital.

Many patients in rural Wellington communities currently must travel over an hour to receive MRI diagnostics.  Having an MRI machine at PDH will improve access, allow patients to stay within the region to get an MRI, and alleviate pressures on other hospitals who have the machines.

Once the MRI is up and running, the province will pay for the day-to-day operational costs of the service, but the purchase of medical equipment, including new technology, must be paid for by our generous community.

Dale Franklin, the Foundation’s Development Officer, has come up with unique way to break down the amount needed for the project.  “When you tell people we need to raise $8 million, it sounds like a daunting goal.  When you explain that’s only 1600 people agreeing to pledge $5000 over five years, that makes the amount sound more attainable.”

The very first couple to join the “Five Over Five Club” are Dylan Richardson and Chloe Kaye.  These two young adults, hailing from Arthur and Palmerston respectively, didn’t have to think very long before agreeing to pledge $5000 over five years to the MRI+ Campaign.  “Having an MRI machine in our area just makes sense,” said Chloe.

When asked what prompted them to decide to make the pledge, Dylan said, “We’re both pretty competitive, so we like the fact that we’re first,” he joked.  Chloe added, “My dad is a captain of the Palmerston Fire Department.  Both him and my mom taught me the value of taking care of our community.”

Dylan and Chloe both encouraged other young adults to consider giving to the MRI+ Campaign.  “We know $5000 sounds like a lot,” Chloe said, “but it breaks down to about $83 a month, which is about $2.75 per day.”  They both agreed that young people often have numerous priorities to save money for.  Dylan said, “We hope to own a home in about five years, so we’ve been saving up for that, and only spending money on things that are important.  This is important,” he added.

If you would like to make a pledge or a one-time a donation to the MRI+ Campaign, visit pdhfoundation.ca for more information or call the Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation office at 519-343-2030 x 87701.  Pledges can be arranged via monthly, quarterly or annual donation via credit card, cash or cheque.

$1.3 million Donation Launches Palmerston and District Hospital’s MRI+ Campaign

The Palmerston and District Hospital Foundation was the recipient of a generous bequest from the late Neil Faulkner.  When discussing the gift with family members, the decision was made to direct the funds to the campaign to bring MRI technology to the Palmerston and District Hospital.  Ron Faulkner states “the Palmerston and District Hospital is an important institution in our community, and we are happy to have our uncle’s bequest be used for such a good cause within our community”.

When Dale Franklin, Development Officer, learned the Faulkner Family “Rebellion” in northern Ontario was only 20 minutes from her own family get together on the Civic Holiday weekend, it couldn’t have been more serendipitous.  It was the perfect opportunity to snap a photo and thank them for directing the $1.3 million bequest from their Uncle Neil toward the MRI+ Campaign.

“We are so pleased to be able to launch our MRI+ Campaign with such a generous donation,” said Dale.  “Our hospital will be bringing MRI technology to rural Wellington County, thanks to generous donations, and this is an amazing gift to build our campaign on”.

In December 2022 the province announced a new MRI machine would be coming to Palmerston and District Hospital. While the government will provide the operating funds to staff and operate the new MRI, it’s up to the PDH Foundation to raise the $8 million needed for the machine, retrofitting the space, installation and training.

Current wait times for a non-emergency MRI scan are 133 days.  Foundation President Earl Campbell states that “having an MRI machine at Palmerston and District Hospital will alleviate pressure on other hospitals with MRIs, as well as reduce travel time for patients in the area”.

“With this bequest, along with Radiothon, and gifts given directly to the MRI+ Campaign, our donation total is currently just over $2 million dollars.  We’re off to a great start!” said Mark Leslie, Co-Chair of the MRI+ Campaign.  Dan Hill, also a Co-Chair of the Campaign Committee adds that “gifts such as these will ensure a successful campaign.  Our campaign to raise the $8 million needed to bring this technology to Palmerston will be happening over the next 3 – 5 years, and we encourage people to consider a gift to the Campaign”.

If you would like to make a donation to the MRI+ Campaign, you can visit pdhfoundation.ca for more information, or contact the Foundation office at 59-343-2030 x 87701 or email [email protected].  Any amount donated is valued and appreciated.

Dale notes that “time and time again, our amazing community has supported our fundraising efforts to provide vital equipment for the Palmerston and District Hospital.  We know that with their help we will make this project a reality”.
